The major reason why the computer slows down is the insufficiency of hardware memory. The physical memory of a computer consists of the actual storage in the RAM or the Random Access Memory. A virtual memory on the other hand is a substitute set of memory addresses which programs use to store their functions & features. Virtual memories expand the storage space from where the application can be accessed. Since virtual memories may be times greater in size than the physical memory, the actual memory in the RAM cannot accommodate all the excess memory.
However, the computer can over on executing programs by copying the virtual memory in to the RAM in the work of multi-tasking. In the event the physical memory or the RAM is congested to perform tasks simultaneously, then it significantly decelerates the computer performance. The hard drive might be in need of cleaning. Junk files can be erased to free-up disk space & programs that are never used may be up for clearing. The hard drive may need defragmenting & empty registry keys, missing DLLs, invalid file extensions & activeX issues are torpidity factors that can be cured by free registry fixers & optimizers from the net.
Computer contaminants may have invaded the process. Computers are susceptible to assaults from malware, including adware & adware. They leak-ins from the firewall & security shields of systems are feasible & they may also emanate from exchange of files from removable flash drives & from the electronic mail.

There is a technique called rootkits that enable manipulation of the operating process & deep-seats the malware, escaping notice of the user. So smart are these techniques that they are not included in the list of the process processes. Aptly, the term rootkits now usually refers to the misleading routines in malicious program.
