Where Should Your IT Budget Go for 2011?


Technology is a fast moving industry & it is not always clear where you ought to invest in order to best move your company forward. Investing in the wrong area may mean you are likely to find yourself having to spend over necessary in the short term future; putting a cost on adopting an expertise late in the day is a vague & hard query to answer, but there most definitely is a cost to the business. Social networking sites are not for spotty teenagers, but understand this; the spotty teenager of today is the IT manager of tomorrow.

Virtualization
Our customers are asking for this more & more; whether it is desktop virtualization or for your enterprise servers, the advantages are clear to see. Less hardware needed where lots of servers are consolidated onto physical machine, fewer compatibility issues where applications are being virtualized on separate virtual servers; less time spent rebuilding if a service fails. Deployment of applications are streamlined where all the work is being done server side, which means less overtime for the techies & less chance of jogging in to timely issues when performing upgrades. So, reduced costs, better utilization of your current hardware & simpler deployment for your IT staff; what is not to like?
Cloud Computing
Cloud computing has similarities to virtualization in terms of the benefits, but the method is different. Virtualization is about server acting like lots of servers, whereas cloud computing are a lot of remote servers acting as computing surroundings locally. Again, significant savings can be made by employing cloud computing within your business, deployment / implementation is completed remotely, it is highly customizable & even more automated.

Unified Communications
The actual buzz phrase of 2011 in our view, & rightly so. Most people think of an IP based phone method when unified communications comes to mind, but it is a lot over that. It is true that a unified communications method will let you make cheaper calls, but they expect that video conferencing will finally become more prevalent than voice calls. Add to this that lots of companies have network storage attached to their communications method, some even using it for video surveillance within the company, it is clear to see the benefits it can bring to any business.
