The best way to document the Thunderbolt is by comparing it with the USB since it is actually designed after it. Like the USB, Thunderbolt is a file transport expertise, only faster. The latest version of the former (USB.0) can transfer knowledge at the rate of Gbps while the latter can transfer the same amount of knowledge in half the time. That is right, Thunderbolt cables have a transfer speed of0 Gbps! Thunderbolt is perhaps the greatest breakthrough of this decade in the I/O expertise.
For over decade, they have waited for the USB to be able to implement different technologies all simultaneously. Today, as the USB.0 is slowly doing so, Thunderbolt has already challenged USB's mechanism. With a more superior setup, Thunderbolt can actually link lots of different technologies using a single Thunderbolt cable, something which the USB expertise took long to provide its users. Through this expertise, they can envision a near future where a laptop computer or a Smartphone will be able to maintain hosting lots of different devices while operating at maximum performance. Speed is the key to everything & with the wonderful speed that only Thunderbolt can offer, it is not impossible for this vision to happen in a few years to come.
Replacing USB is still a far-end vision but the incorporation of Thunderbolt to popular products produced by Apple is making this vision a reality each year. Increasingly companies are even signing in to have the Thunderbolt incorporated in to their systems. For example, Canon has already announced that finally they will also produce a camera that is Thunderbolt-ready. This means that Canon will be able to provide its consumers with a camera that can transfer heavy video & picture knowledge from point to another in "just seconds". Seamless transfer is already within reach.
To date, apart from the MacBook Pro, few Thunderbolt-ready devices are out in the market. One of them is the Promise Pegasus HD enclosure which can encase or 6 high-level hard drives. The 4-bay Promise Pegasus HD Enclosure can support terabyte hard drives or a total of terabytes, or terabyte hard drives rounding up to a total of 8 terabytes. The transfer rate of the 4-bay Promise Pegasus is only 500 MBps but this speed is already0 times faster than the transfer speed of the USB.0. Moreover, the 6-bay enclosure can support 6 terabyte or 6 terabyte hard drives with a transfer speed of 800 MBps.
Another Thunderbolt-enabled device is from LaCie called the Tiny Giant Disk. This device is actually an outside hard drive that consists of high-level hard disks linked together. The Tiny Giant Disk transfers knowledge through Thunderbolt but since the MacBook Pro is the only product from Apple having a Thunderbolt port & since as of the moment, Apple has all the rights to exclusively produce products with Thunderbolt ports, then as of the moment, the Tiny Giant Disk is only compatible with the MacBook Pro.
